This year I had the pleasure of celebrating the New Year on Beale Street. Sunday morning I headed up to Fulton to meet up with former 405 E 11th resident Matt Flint, faience Lindsey and her three friends. We hit the road around 9:30 and headed south. Matt and I made it to St. Louis before we realized we needed some road sodas for the ride. We stopped at a gas station and everyone filled up on booze. The rest of the ride was spent swapping stories, and drinking every time we passed farm irrigation systems (they were plentiful and we needed something to drink to).
We rolled into Memphis around 4. We checked into our super posh downtown hotel then headed out for the evening. We ate at the Rum Boogie Cafe (tasty pork but small proportions) then checked out a couple of bars that had live music. Beale Street was fairly dead for the day before New years, I guess everyone was saving up for the next night. Somewhere a long the way I got pretty loaded and felt the urge to dance like crazy. We found a awesome 4-man funk bank doing popular Hip Hop-ish covers and 'danced the night away.' I am a terrible dancer, for the record. I don't fully recall going to bed, but I awoke something the next morning fully clothed on top of the covers, shoes on and all.
The next day I woke up early got breakfast and waited around for the rest the rise. After more breakfast (Denny's) we walked down to the Sun Studio (home to recording artists Elvis, Johnny Cash, and more). A couple of the girls went on the tour while the rest of us waited in the cafe section of the place. I headed across the street to a gas station and picked up some 40s to drink while we waited.
After the tour we checked out some other sites then crawled into a carriage for a cliche ride around the town.
After a quick jog around town, I cleaned up and started celebrating (drinking) at the hotel bar. Noteworthy: the bums of Memphis are extremely nice, they were very pleasant during my run. Always up for a fist bum and conversation.
Due to a lack of time, dinner was at the Hotel bar, then we headed to Beale Street. We spent most of the evening at Alfred's- a nice bar with live music. Every joint was asking for ridiculous covers, Alfreda's wanted 20 bucks a head. Fortunately for me, they don't watch their back door too closely ;)
We wrung in the New Year there then headed around the the street to catch some more local color. We eventually wound up back at the hotel bar to end the night.
The trip was a ton of fun. I'm definitely looking forward to another trip down to Beale Street.
